Program II: Portugal: A Ninth House Adventure
A five-day guided tour to the historic and spiritual sites of Portugal (July 4–July 9)

Day 1, July 4: Lisbon. Check-in at your convenience at the Dom Carlos Liberty Hotel. At 7.00pm, meet at Alan’s home for a cocktail party, buffet dinner, and orientation get-together. Alan lives in the heart of historic Lisbon, just a few minutes from your hotel. After dinner, we will all go out for a guided stroll around the “neighborhood” where we will enter the Rossio (Lisbon’s major square) and continue through the Baixa District to the Praça do Comércio (a huge and beautiful palace). Everything is illuminated and the sights of these parts of town at night are quite wonderful to behold.

Tomar-Convento do CristoDay 2, July 5: Lisbon. After breakfast, we will be picked up by our private coach and taken to Saint George’s Castle (over 1000 years old with commanding views of the city), The Lisbon (ancient cathedral founded in 1145AD built on top of and containing the remains of Moorish, Roman, and Neolithic villages), and the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos (Monestary of the Jerónimos monks–incredible 15th-16th century buildings). Lunch on route in a specially chosen restaurant and dinner outdoors in the historic Alfama District.

Day 3, July 6: Sintra. Breakfast at the Dom Carlos Liberty. At 9.00am, we will be taken to this historic town about an hour’s drive from the Capital. Sintra is a most beautiful and charming town where we will visit the Pena Palace (high atop the Serra da Sintra, fairytale palace of the kings and queens of Portugal), and A Quinta da Regaleira (huge estate of the 19th century head of the Portuguese Masonic Order, including ritual grottos, towers, and wells). Picnic lunch and dinner at the Café Paris, one of Alan’s favorite restaurants.

Day 4, July 7: Tómar. Arrival and check-in followed by lunch. Our afternoon will be devoted to a visit to the 13th century Convento do Cristo, center of activity of the Knights Templar during the Middle Ages with a guided tour offered by an expert historian. Overnight stay and dinner in one of the city’s finest restaurants.

ObidosDay 5, July 8: Óbidos—Located within a castle’s walls, this historic town offers many esthetic joys to the traveler. We can walk along the ramparts and take in the amazing views, visit some of the many interesting churches and monuments, and even stop to enjoy Óbidos’ famous cherry liqueur served out of chocolate cups. Check-in at our picturesque hotel and then after a bit of rest, we will go out for lunch. Lunch is followed by a guided tour of the town when we will then have some free time to either explore Óbidos on our own or go back to the hotel. At 7.30pm we will meet for our final group dinner. In the morning of July 9th after breakfast, our coach will come to take us back to Lisbon.

We will be making two stops in Lisbon. The first will be at the airport for those of you leaving Portugal on July 9th. We expect to arrive at Lisbon airport at around 11.00am so please book your flights accordingly. For those of you staying on for Part III of our Summer Program or for those who wish to continue your visit to Lisbon for any other reason, our second stop will be at the Dom Carlos Liberty Hotel.
